Make A Wish Foundation Rocks!

Last Saturday I was part of something very cool; Making a wish come through for a 14 year old girl who beat bone cancer. Kate just started walking again a month ago, after undergoing 8 surgeries (some took 11 hours!) and 18 rounds of chemo. Thankfully they had discovered the cancer at a relatively early stage when she started playing soccer and kept complaining about pain in her legs. Within a week after the discovery was made, Kate was undergoing surgery and chemo. After 2 years of misery, losing all of her hair and many large scars from all the surgeries, the “Make a Wish” foundation wanted to grant Kate a wish. Her wish was… to be pampered, be a beautiful fashion model for the day, and have a real model shoot (that’s where I came in :-).

The St. Regis Monarch offered a room for her and her family to stay in, as well as a manicure/pedicure in the spa. My job was to take pictures of Kate getting ready and in and around the St. Regis. After our mini shoot, a limo was waiting for her to take her to Fashion Island to get a hair and make up done. Before leaving though, there was a whole fan club (all the St. Regis staff) and paparazzi waiting in front of the limo at the St. Regis, all wanting her autograph. Very cute.

Kate got her hair and make up done at ‘Toni and Guy” and  from there we continued our shoot at Fashion Island. Kate looked beautiful with her new hair style and new outfit she had picked out. We didn’t have much time because the next thing on the agenda was “walking the runway” at a Bloomingdales fashion show. She walked it like a true pro! (Since a month she can walk short distances again without crutches)

It was a lot of fun spending the day with Kate and her family. I’m so glad she’s fine. She’ll always have some issues with her legs, but she looked so happy, healthy and beautiful. So glad this story had a happy ending and I could be part of making her wish come true!
